A new web presence for a UN supported NGO

The Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) is an UN-backed Geneva-based International NGO with a global presence. In 2019, they approached Oyster for support in redesigning and rebuilding a new website to update their digital presence, but also increase the accessibility and usability of a number of key areas of the site that are used on the ground to deliver their mission of "Societies without Torture or ill-treatment".

A wide reaching website with complex content requirements

The website itself featured a wide range of content including an extensive news section, the OPCAT database, National Preventative Mechanism (NPM) toolkits, a resource hub (including videos & podcasts), as well as the DFD Database and Annual Reports.

Each set of content was imported into the APT website and has been designed to be accessible and intuitive for users to interact with and understand. Each section of the site benefited from its own custom design that suited the content, but also the users that were interacting with it.

Knowledge Hub and Detention Focus Database

The APT website features a large number of publications and articles in its Knowledge Hub, these resources are used by users around the globe to deliver and promote torture prevention. A key part of the brief was an easy to navigate Knowledge Hub with powerful search capability and content to be categorised so it could remain accessible as the Knowledge Hub grew.

In response to this requirement, Oyster designed and built a bespoke Knowledge Hub using Drupal. Each resource was loaded onto the website and tagged correctly which, along with a in-built Search API, means users can access the resources they need in a much-improved way while ensuring the knowledge hub can scale and grow as more resources are added.

OPCAT Database

The Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture (OPCAT) Database is an international database that monitors the efforts by countries around the world to prevent the use of torture in detention. Supported by the UN Sub-committee on torture prevention, the OPCAT is managed by the Association for the Prevention of Torture.

Oyster designed an intuitive world map that allows users to discover the OPCAT status of a country quickly and easily as well as provide more information with each country having its own profile page that any interested party can access.

Mobile ready

A key feature of the APT website is that it's used around the globe by a wide range of users on a large number of different devices including mobile, desktop and tablet.

A crucial part of the design and build process was ensuring that the website was fully responsive and could be used as easily on a mobile as it could on a desktop. This included access to complex areas of the website such as the OPCAT database, DFD and NPM information.
