As part of our work with the Hampshire Cultural Trust, Oyster was asked to develop a new brand for the Milestones Living History Museum in Basingstoke. As part of the project, Oyster’s design team developed a brand that reflected the interactivity of the exhibitions at the museum as well as the 150 year period of Hampshire history represented by the museum.
We were particularly excited by the delivery of a fully animated logo and animated advertising assets for use in museum welcome area and throughout the site which really helped to bring the identity to life.
Each character within the logo represents a time period or technology crucial to the history of life in Hampshire and was a huge part of the challenge in creating a new identity for Milestones. As the audiences for the museum are so wide in demographics, an identity that appealed to and was recognisable by all was incredibly important.
The brand process also encapsulated how the logo and identity would work on museum merchandise, and part of the Milestones brand, the guidelines cover brand guidance around merchandise specifically. Similarly, the interiors of the museum were required to reflect the new brand, and working with an external agency, we ensured that the brand and interiors matched perfectly. part of the challenge for the museum interior was to develop a set of dementia friendly icons. We created these, and they are now used throughout museum signage and marketing, bringing a consistent and highly legible visual language to all audiences.
