Chichester Cathedral Website

Chichester Cathedral is a living, working place of worship that has been at the centre of life in Chichester for over nine centuries. The Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Diocese of Chichester which covers East and West Sussex. With daily events and services, the website is a vital tool for the Cathedral to communicate to parishioners, the local community, tourists and many more audiences.

The brief

Chichester Cathedral needed a new website that will reflect and celebrate the Cathedral's core Christian identity while also doing justice to the diverse and vibrant life that is offered around this central purpose. The old website had an outdated design and user experience which did not reflect the breadth and dynamism of the Cathedral and its work.

The challenge was to develop an engaging and easy-to-use site that appealed to established and new audiences. The Cathedral aims to be welcoming, accessible, inspiring, diverse and inclusive, trustworthy and community-focused.

The new site needed meet the needs of three of the Cathedral’s charities and its commercial company, combining all the Cathedral’s existing sites into one and strengthening the Cathedral’s branding and online identity.

The solution

The new Cathedral website is all inclusive. All parts of the organisations, partners and friends are represented within one site, although presented as a whole, working towards their joint aims. The site design is modern but with a nod to the Cathedral's historical and traditional roots. The feature packed events section brings together services and events, allowing users to filter what they are searching for and navigation to the right sections with ease.

The balance between the Cathedral offering and the ask for support was a key consideration. The CMS allows the Cathedral to create new pages and sections that can appear completely unique using Drupal's page builder mixed with Oyster's technical know-how.

The Cathedral Tour allows the user to navigate around the Cathedral's features, architecture, artworks and treasures and learn more about them. There is also an interactive map of the Cathedral within the larger 'Chichester Historic Quarter' pointing out other buildings and places of note.
