Ampleforth Abbey & College
Ampleforth is a place with many functions: an abbey, a college, a school, a visitor attraction, a producer of cider and home to around 70 monks. What brings them all together is a way of life, the fifteen-hundred year-old Benedictine precept: that we should live prayerfully, compassionately and humbly in the service of God and our fellow men. Set high up in the beautiful Yorkshire dales, Ampleforth is an impressive and stunning landmark, attracting visitors and students from worldwide.
Ampleforth had lots of different websites all working on different sub domains and representing the different areas of Ampleforth: the college, the Abbey etc. As all areas are underpinned by a common approach and way of life, the Ampleforth marketing team wanted a site where the homepage welcomed everyone and introduced the Ampleforth way before directing them to the different subsections of the site.
The old site offered very little in terms of content management and a key requirement of the new website was the ability for the marketing team to manage site content.
The college and school websites needed to deliver plenty of information to parents and prospective parents, including integration with calendars and school systems.
Finally, the design needed to work for all areas of Ampleforth and deliver an experience worthy of the atmosphere of Ampleforth.
For the 'marketing' site (the homepage and supporting pages) Oyster delivered an interactive brochure experience taking the user through the Ampleforth experience and explaining the different areas. The marketing layer delivers the overarching 'feel' and leads users on to relevant site sections.
The site is fully responsive, content managed and integrates with the school calendars and systems. The project was split into two phases. Phase one is now complete and delivered the marketing site, college and school sites. The remaining sites are to be delivered in phase two later this year.
